I'd forgotten about this book. I remember it was well written (well, what would you expect from Peter Carey), but I don't remember being terribly impressed with the story. I'm not a big fan, I'm afraid.

I liked this book. The characters are all horribly flawed, even ulikeable. I don't think I'd like to share a meal and a bottle of wine with any of them (really only 3 main characters, but even the extras are sort of nasty pieces of work). But somehow I kept wanting to know where their bad choices were going to take them.

I struggled through this. I put it down to read another book and wasn't eager to pick it up again. I considered not finishing it at all but continued for lack of something else to read at the time. The style of writing is not really my cup of tea - I found it very slow going and at the end wondered if it had been worth persevering with.
