So somehow I made it all the way to 38 years of age without ever having read The Thorn Birds despite the fact it was published before I was born, despite the fact that it’s an acknowledged Australian classic. I bought this copy several years ago, intending to read more books classed as Australian classics and didn’t get around to any of them. But when this was chosen (voted) as a choice for my online bookclub, it gave me an excuse to finally tackle it.

I've been meaning to read the Thorn Birds for a long time and picked up this copy at my local library. I'll note that I had heard of the book because it's Australian and well-loved, but I had no idea what it was about before I began to read.

I loved the story but more because I loved to despise many of the characters. I would love to pick Ms McCullough's brain to find out just what it was that she wanted me to feel because I hated most of the characters. I despise Ralph and Meggie and her mother and father and husband and everyone except maybe her son. For him my soul cried out but for the others, they deserved every bit of misery they got.
