An interesting historical fiction. There is very little Australian HF that uses Sydney during the Federation Referendum as a setting so I was intrigued to read this. I did find I got quite a bit out of it regarding women's suffrage and rich vs poor living conditions in the city at that time.
The story had good pace, I was hoping for more political intrigue than personal intrigue, there seemed to be enough to keep me interested.

Thank you to Allen & Unwin for an uncorrected proof of this book.

This book is set in colonial Sydney right at the end of the 19th century and in the lead up to the vote for Federation. It focuses on government minister Alasdair Dunlevy, his wife Eleanor and their maid Alice.

All have secrets that they are hiding and are unsure of how to resolve their various predicaments....and when they each make their individual choices, nothing quite turns out as they were expecting.
