I can probably best characterize Breath as a moderately stirring but fairly weightless read. Narrated from the point of a view of an emergency paramedics, the book reads like a loose bildungsroman centered on surfing on the beaches around Sawyer, a provincial town near Perth in Western Australia. Bruce Pike (Pikelet) is a middle age paramedic and when he is called out to a teenage adventure gone wrong, he reflects back in time to his own teenage years and how his own life could have easily gone the same way.

In the interest of full disclosure- I didn't expect to like this book. Most of the time I like my fiction light and fluffy, with a happily ever after. I don't read a lot of literature. A friend loaned me a copy though, and I recently read The Shepherd's Hut and by the end I enjoyed it so figured I'd give it a go.

I think that Tim Winton draws better male characters than women - this book is flooded with testosterone. If this is what it's really like to grown up an Aussie boy, heaven help them all.
