“There was a single homestead somewhere to the north of the fence, and another to the south. Next-door neighbours, three hours apart.”

This takes place 1500 km west of Brisbane in the Australian Outback. The thing about living in remote areas is that you can suffer from (or enjoy) both isolation and claustrophobia. The isolation is obvious. I say claustrophobia because what interaction you may have with family and neighbours can become uncomfortably close with no respite. Suffering brings a l

The Lost Man is book #3 for Jane Harper, and I always look to the third book to determine what sort of staying power an author has. Of course, having been overwhelmingly impressed with Harper's first two novels, The Dry and Force of Nature, I never really had any doubts that this author was the real deal, one of the most remarkable voices to come along in the past few years. But, if anyone had any lingering thoughts of will it last, The Lost Man should solidly put those thoughts to rest. Jane Ha ...more

An atmospheric Australian Outback setting, realistic characters, and intricately layered plot made this another excellent read from this author.

The other day as I was going to sleep I thought how much I'm enjoying this read and then I realised that I'm approximately halfway but nothing much has really happened! Ha! I guess the author's prose is more enjoyable than I thought.

This was terrific. I think this is the best of her books so far. Excellent characters and storyline and a bit more intricate and engrossing compared to her previous ones. Definitely worth a look this one.

I found the first two thirds of this quite boring, which was surprising as I enjoyed her other books. The domestic violence angle redeemed it somewhat and in the last hundred pages the momentum picked up nicely.

This is a fantastic book about how brothers evolve in the same household. The killer reveal is a surprise.
