Ex-homicide and now acting Sergeant Alan Auhl had been called in from retirement to run the cold-case section; he was subsequently called to the site of the skeleton. Establishing the crime had occurred around five years prior, Alan set to work with h ...more

“Baz darted in and pinned the head with his crook. Then he crouched and used his other hand to flick away lumps of concrete until the snake was free. He picked it up, keeping the whipping front section clear with his crook, and poured it into a hessian sack.
‘Piece of cake,’ he said, grinning at the others. Who were more interested, it seemed, in a depression under the middle section of the slab.
‘What, we got a whole family of the buggers?’

Five years after retirement, Acting Sergeant Alan Auhl has returned to the Victorian police force to work in the Cold Case and Missing Person Unit, where his experience, which includes a decade in homicide, fails to impress his younger colleagues who refer to him as ‘Retread’.

Loved it. A really fast read & lighter than his other detective series'. Alan Auhl is a great character & I hope we get to see more of him.

This is only the second book I've read by this author and I really enjoy his writing. This one, in particular, was a satisfying page-turner and it helped that it was set in Melbourne where I live. Great characters. Like others, I hope the author writes more about Alan Auhl. (I could definitely see it as a series.)
