Argh. This could have been so much more. Throsby's language and turns of phrase were so beautiful in parts. The initial description of the townsfolk knowing each other's business was lovely and rang true.
The story had enough suspense and plot diversions to be interesting. Unfortunately it became all bogged down in endless repetition. Repeating who was related to whom and how, who lived next door to each other. Even complete sentences were repeated at various times in the book. If this was a nar ...more

An overall ok read, but at times I struggled to be interested in it.
It seemed to lack dimension and the number of characters at times overwhelming to keep up.
The ending is obviously the whole point of the book, but it seems to not be the forefront of the plot anywhere else in the book, and therefore it all just seemed a bit disjointed.

Loved the prose. She's an awesome writer. Really looking forward to her next one.

A small country town in Australia, two missing people within a week and everyone is walking on eggshells. Told primarily through the eyes of Jean, a teenager in the town, we come to know the characters and secrets of the town.

I felt like it took me forever to finish this book even though it's actually a very easy read. I struggled to remember who was who as there were quite a lot of characters. The funny thing was, I was staying in Currarong on the NSW south coast when I was reading this (super small town) and it seemed like the author was describing it. Except, Goodwood isn't a seaside town. I felt like the story didn't flow very well. It's like the author decided to tack on something character changing about Jean a

It was ok. I found it hard to keep interested in the story. I didn't really enjoy Jean's voice & think the story might have been better if told by someone else. I didn't really care about the characters & felt there wasn't much in the way of mystery/suspense.
