Set in the seedy streets of the Sydney suburbs of Newtown and Darlinghurst in 1946, Dark Fires Shall Burn was a fantastic read that I was unable to put down. It gives a good insight into the the sexual and criminal underbelly of Sydney of the post- WWII period. I particularly enjoyed the authors description of gay beats (and the men who used them), a fascinating piece of Sydney's history. The fact that is based on a real unsolved murder only added to my enjoyment of the book. ...more
