Rachel’s last talk before the school holidays was in a little place called Hope Creek – she was grateful to be having a break as she had begun to feel that she couldn’t go on. She was at breaking point. Meeting with Belinda (call me Bel) at the hair salon felt like a breath of fresh air – going out to Bel’s property for her overnight stay, she felt the peace and calm of the countryside descend on her. But when she met Bel’s brother Bluey she was shocked to feel a stirring of attraction – a feeling completely foreign to her since her children’s deaths.

When Bel persuaded Rachel to stay in town for a couple of weeks; the break would be good for her; she could help with activities which were coming up – Rachel didn’t need a lot of persuasion. As she gradually fell in love with Hope Creek, she also felt a closeness to Bluey’s sixteen year old daughter Jess. And Bluey himself – there was a feeling of attraction between them; but Rachel felt she needed to deny her feelings – she couldn’t betray the memory of her children. Would the peace and tranquillity of Hope Creek help with Rachel’s grief? Would she have a second chance at life and love in this town of hope?

Letting Go by Aussie author Kerrie Paterson is the first in the Hope Creek series and it was an absolutely delightful novella – heartbreaking and sad, but filled with hope and optimism it covered areas of grief; teenage angst and the much despaired teenage road deaths. The never ending battle in trying to save these kids’ lives; in making them realise they’re not invincible. I thoroughly enjoyed Letting Go and will be keen to read the next in the series. Highly recommended.
