I didn't know that Anchorite / Anchoress was a real thing in the past. I'd understand a person's choice to commit themselves to God (monks or nuns, etc) but to be locked up in a room with no sunlight and a death rite read over your still living body?!?!? That's just crazy-talk. Especially when one is only 17; even if she has known her calling since she's little, she was also running away from something which was never a good idea to begin this sort of life. Phew! This is hard work - interesting, even fascinating, but definitely not an easy read.
A 13th-century, 17-year-old woman, Sarah opts for being locked in a dungeon to lead a life of contemplation & prayer, rather than face the rigours of life in the real world. This is much what any nun or monk might have done but taking it those few steps further to include solitary confinement as well.
As with so many before & after her, she has made this choice for the wrong reasons, not from vocation but ...more
