A warm hearted story of family, motherhood and midwifery, The Secrets of Midwives by Sally Hepworth features three generations of women - Neva, Grace, and Floss.
"I suppose you could say I was born to be a midwife. Three generations of women in my family had devoted their lies to bringing babies into the world; the work was in my blood. But my path wasn’t so obvious as that. I wasn’t my mother—a basket-wearing hippie who rejoiced in the magic of new, precious life. I wasn’t my grandmother—wise, ...more

I can't believe a few months ago I didn't know Sally Hepworth existed! I'm glad I now do, and am totally fangirling her.
The Secrets of Midwives is the story of 3 generations of women in the same family. All midwives, and all with a secret they are keeping from those closest to them.
Each chapter alternates between a different characters point of view. Look, in all honesty I'm not a fan of the alternating first person narration, I find it too easy to lose track of who is telling the story. In thi ...more

I really appreciated the medical side of this story, which I found compelling. I really liked the female characters ... all strong women who have had to make uncomfortable decisions. I did not really like any of the male characters though, which I think distracted from the story.

Three generations of midwives, each generation with their own secrets. Neva Bradley is the youngest, a third generation midwife who works in a birthing centre. She’s been keeping a secret from everyone, including her mother and grandmother. She’s pregnant herself and she’s determined that the truth surrounding the baby’s conception be kept secret. But her mother Grace is equally determined to find out exactly who the baby’s father is and what has been going on in Neva’s life. She’s desperate for

4.5 stars.
Neva Bradley, a third-generation midwife, is determined to keep the details surrounding her own pregnancy hidden from her family and co-workers for as long as possible. Her mother, Grace, cannot let this secret rest, even while her own life begins to crumble around her. For Floss, Neva's grandmother and a retired midwife, Neva's situation thrusts her back 60 years in time to a secret which, if revealed, will have life-changing consequences for them all.

I knew nothing about this book until it was recommended to me. The stories of the three generations of midwives are fascinating, and the story is told by alternating narratives by the three main characters. I found each of the characters totally believable and its hard not to get involved in their stories. There is a little bit of everything in this novel - romance, secret lives, a death and babies being born. It will appeal to readers of women's contemporary fiction. It was an easy and most enj

Predictable but addictive and an easy read. One of the best books I've read in ages!
