I read this as a stand-alone, not realising that it was a continuation of Mr Chen's Emporium & The Jade Widow, but I don't think I lost anything by not having read the earlier books.

I wasn't impressed with the writing style or the characters, it, & they, seemed more adolescent than mature adults. The characters were very sketchy in general. So much so that when someone died I had trouble remembering who they were.
