Ryan Décarie woke to the shock realization that he was thirty years old. His birthday was a day he would prefer to forget, but he wouldn’t be able to – not if his parents had any say in the matter – and they would. But he didn’t mind hearing from his favourite niece, four year old Bridget; the most amazing little girl in the world in his opinion, and she had done a lot to calm her Uncle Ry’s life, he knew that for a fact.

As Ryan left his apartment he was stopped suddenly by the vision of a taxi Ryan Décarie woke to the shock realization that he was thirty years old. As Ryan left his apartment he was stopped suddenly by the vision of a taxi cab pulling to a sudden halt in front of him, with a young woman tumbling from the back door. But she was yelling at the driver as she exited – Ryan could see that she was furious – the anger came off her in waves. When her belongings ended up strewn across the footpath and Ryan stepped forward to help, he had no idea his life was about to change irrevocably…for the angry young woman was none other than Bente Denison, a woman whose heart he had broken five years prior, but had not seen since.

Bente had loved Ryan (truth be told she still did) but she wasn’t about to let him hurt her again. So when he told her he had changed, she wasn’t convinced…why should she trust him after what he did to her five years ago? With Charli and Adam both working, Ryan babysat Bridget as often as he could – he adored his niece and couldn’t seem to get enough of her. So when Bente came to the park too, Bridget was jealous. And so began the wonderful tale of a four year old believer of fairies (how could she not with Charli as her Mum) teaching her beloved uncle just how the world worked.

Secret North is another beautiful story of LaLa land but from Ryan’s perspective this time. The truth of the title of the book revealed near the ending was fabulous! Told alternatively by Ryan and Bente with sprinklings of Charlie, Adam and the parents throughout, it was a great follow-up in the Secret Wishes series. But my favourite character of all is Bridget….what an absolute sweetheart!

Aussie author G.J. Walker-Smith is a brilliant storyteller, absolutely on top of her game, and I would recommend the Secret Wishes series highly to everyone, but especially lovers of YA.

I was super lucky to get an early copy of Secret North.
I have adored Ryan from the minute he showed up in Second Hearts. This story was another fantastic addition to the series. Ryan and Bridget's relationship is a beautiful one. GJ Walker-Smith always manages to spin a magical tale, I don't know how she does it. She made me laugh and cry. She even converted me to an Adam Lover, which is no mean feat. I love Ryan. It was great to read his story and see the relationship with his niece (who reminds me a lot of my own daughter). I love the ending too. Great book.
