This is a history of Rome from its beginning with Romulus and Remus through the granting of universal citizenship by Caracalla in 212 CE. Rather than starting at the beginning, Beard starts with Cicero's consulship in 63 BCE and Catilina's plot to overthrow the government. She says this is because of the extraordinary amount of contemporary documentation of what was going on then, from letters, speeches and other writings. An excellent introduction to Roman history. Beard is a good story teller, and her enthusiasm for ancient Rome makes this an easy read.

Yo! Some 600 pages of the history, culture, and characters of ancient Rome, the product of obviously careful research and careful, eloquent prose. I did have to shelve it once in a while and get on to something lighter, but I enjoyed all of it.

SPQR is accessible, engaging, idiosyncratic, and memorable. Beard has a prodigious knowledge about the subject but paints with a light hand. I was already familiar with the standard
