The snowballing story, impossibly interesting heroes and villains, mindboggling victories, twists, and betrayals, and the unstoppable roll to the death of the Roman Republic from Marius/Sulla through to Augustus vs. Antony and Cleopatra is better than any fictional narrative ever written. Easy to read. Chronological, but also enticing. I would have liked a little more information on the Punic Wars, but I understand it's not wholly important to this particular slice of history. The timeline in the back of the book is super helpful to orient yourself when you get lost.
