I have never doubted Mary Beard's talent and skill, and rightfully so. Each chapter, which focuses on a different topic, is masterfully and engagingly written. I was captivated by everything she was saying, and it was (mostly) free from the overly-complicated writing or smug biases I've read in other history books. She presents important arguments and satisfying discussions of them, and I came away feeling like I learned a lot.

Initially disappointed because I presumed Beard was going to discuss the classics, I was rapidly intrigued by what she was actually writing. These 31 reviews of various books about the works of the ancients (and archaeologists who literally uncovered physical works) are a different kind of confrontation, which I enjoyed quite a lot.

Mary Beard is always great for both apologetics and good relevant scholarship. Worth a read for those interested in the Classics . . .
