This book has a lot of mixed reviews however I believe it depends on how you want to view it and I also believe that the reviews are affected by peoples ideologies.

I saw most people inferred that we have to give things to people so they will like us? Which is obviously not the right attributes in trying to teach children about friendship and giving of oneself for these are not qualities that should be rewarded, and the poor rainbow fish has to give away all of his lovely scales to jealous, hatef

I read this book to my reception class at story time after having lots of issues with children not sharing the play dough in ONE day. This story is about The most beautiful fish in the sea who is asked to share one of his shining scales with a little blue fish but he refuses to do so. All the other fish in the sea leave him alone as he was not willing to share. The fish starts to wonder why he has no friends. He then goes to the wise octopus for some advice, and she tells him to give away his sc ...more

This is a really enjoyable book about a fish with beautiful shiny scales of all the colours of the rainbow ,hence the name. The rainbow fish is very proud and haughty and won't play or share his scales with the other fish in the ocean, so he loses all his friends. One day he meets a wise octopus who tells him to share his scales by giving one to each fish in the ocean. By doing so he will win back his friends.

The pupils I taught in year 1 really loved this book. It is very colourful and catches

At the beginning of the story the Rainbow Fish is depicted as aesthetically pleasing but morally and emotionally deficient. Through the course of the narrative he learns that building relationships with others comes at a price, but is far more to be desired than the material trappings of li ...more

I believe this book is extremely effective for showing the importance of sharing and friendship. It makes evident that no matter how beautiful the rainbow fish looks with his sparkling scales he was still unhappy. It was only when he was advised by the Octopus that by sharing his scales with the other fish would he learn the true meaning of happiness that he first felt at home in the deep sea.

This book would be excellent for Key Stage One children as with the beautiful descriptions and illustrat
