mary is a sickly, ill-mannered and short tempered girl who is sent to yorkshire to live with her uncle archibald craven. she had to be moved from living with her parents in india because the outbreak of cholera destroying her family.

The Secret Garden is about a young girl called Mary Lennox, who was a very spoilt ungrateful child, she originally lived in India with her parents but had to be sent away to England after her parents had died. Mary was then sent to her uncles house in Yorkshire, where she came across her maid who she stayed good friends with throughout the book. This book tells the story of Mary, who has lost her parents and is sent away to live with her Uncle on his estate in England where she's never been before (having lived in India her whole life) where she is lonely and bored. It is a very interesting story because the main character is not a happy child; she is deep, complex and evidently depressed. She was not close to her parents, but she is nonetheless damaged by their death and her spoilt and selfish traits are strongly conveyed. This is refr ...more

This is wonderful classic children's book. I read this book when I was 8 years old. I remember finding is quite difficult at that age, however, I noticed some of the more confident readings in my previous placement, in year 4, enjoyed this book.
Many found it difficult, as did I at that age, however, by allowing children to challenge themselves this way it allows for them to improve their standard of reading.

A classic tale, The Secret Garden is suitable for both adults and children. The book tells the story of Mary, a ten year old orphan who moves to India as a consequence of a deadly disease which spreads. She goes to live with her cousin and uncle in a huge manor house. Mary finds a key to a hidden door which leads to a secret garden.

This story is great for KS2 but does cover mature themes such as death so would need to be taught with caution. The book would also be suitable to be read as a bed ti
