This is closer to a 3.5 star rating for me. I thought it was quite well written, capturing the era, jargon, and environment. Tom was very well written, Izzy was a bit crazy, and Hannah was a bit shallow as far as character development goes. It may seem strange that I'd identify mostly with the husband in a novel about a women and her child, but I found Izzy to be extremely selfish. Presumed orphaned infant washes ashore after the 3rd miscarriage to an isolated couple who man a lighthouse. They keep her and their secret. Find out a few years later the bereaved mother is still alive... 4 or 5 stars? Possibly a record for most crying during a book, enhanced bc I couldn't put it down and finished the second half in one long night. Moral dilemmas and sympathies for human mistakes and the "villains". The hero was the husband. His unconditional love was amazing. Love can be blind
