Julia Serano's incredibly thoughtful exploration of femaleness and feminity is inspiring. It is inspiring that a trans woman can see so clearly through the enormous volume of stereotyping, garbage, and obfuscation surrounding trans issues. It is inspiring that she, as a biologist, has the scientific background and the analytic mind to cut through pseudoscience and to recognize where even well-intentioned scientists may be holding trans people back. I don't totally agree with Serano on every point of feminist exposé she covers in this book. She definitely covers a lot of seemingly universal concepts in the trans experience. I think this book is geared more towards those trying to reconcile their part in the oppression of trans people and get a taste for what's *really* going on but I would still recommend this book if not for the theory, for the stark and tender moments of real vulnerability Serano shares in this book.
