Eugenides' writing is the kind of writing that makes aspiring writers give up. It is just so good. How Eugenides came up with the idea for the story and then wrote it with complete conviction is intriguing. It was so detailed, so convincing, so moving, that one suspects there of being an autobiographical element to the novel. If not, this is a work of pure genius. This book won the Pulitzer Prize; I am not surprised. It is sweeping and ambitious while also very personal and touching--and often funny. Calliope Stephanides is quite an interesting narrator--especially in the first part of the book, when she is herself (himself) but also omniscient. Quite a trick. This little device actually calls attention to itself rather frequently. I wasn't always sure it worked, but I kept reading, so it must not have bothered me too much. Overall, an impressive addition

This is one of my absolutely favorite books of all time, told from the point of view of a hermaphrodite who lived half of his/her life as a girl and the rest as a boy/man. It's beautiful and a great story, very expertly crafted. It also made me wish I was born a hermaphrodite.
