I listened to the audiobook because Tom Hiddleston reads it and he does a wonderful job. Really enjoyed his performance. Highly recommend the audiobook based on his performance alone, but then I'm a big fan of his work already.
As for the story, I liked that it took place before and during the early years of the first French Revolution but sort of dances around the edges, never getting overly political or depressing like some of the books written about this time period have a tendency to be. But ...more

I should admit that the very first reason attracted me about this book was the fact that Tom Hiddleston read it. And I love audiobooks! But Hiddleston, I think he is one of the best narrators I've ever listened. His voice is riddiculously perfect on giving details for every single character in the book!
