A distinctive voice doesn't necessarily mean a great writer. My dissatisfaction with Kitchen Confidential surprised me because I am such a fan of No Reservations and of Bourdain's voice on that show, which is basically a series of creative nonfiction essays on different locales and cultures. Hmmmm, as someone who owns a restaurant and has been in the industry for over 20 years, I had a hard time with this one. I was very excited to read it when I began, but that quickly faded for me, and by the middle of the book, I found myself skimming and even skipping pages because of all the verbal nonsense that was being spouted. I love Anthony Bourdain's style... that I'll say what I damn well want to and offer no apologies. I loved watching his travel food series and miss him. Listening to him read this book was pure magic. He definitely lived a vivid life.
