A clever and honest look at life in the culinary world. If you have ever entertained the idea of becoming a chef, then I highly recommend reading this first. I enjoy cooking myself, but havee long suspected that doing it for a living would suck much of the joy out of it for me. This book and it's no-holes-barred appraisal of this occupation, which at times comes across as more of an elitist cult, only serves to reinforce my initial ideas.

I love books about what it's like, really like, behind the scenes in restaurants and this gives me a heaping helping of just that subject. You have to admire the writing. Anthony Bourdain writes the way he speaks: uncensored and uninhibited by what the public thinks. He wrote this book for his line cooks and chef friends, not for the mainstream audience. It's a brutally honest memoir of working in the service industry. You feel like you were right there in the kitchen with AB.
