Read this not even a year ago and again now, and the entire series the first time round. Omg, what can I say?? Never read fantasy before really in my life, but friends kept saying I must read it, and the tv show had come out, so I decided to give it a go.

Was hooked from the first page. Absolutely loved it. Has become one of my all-time fav novels.

It really reads more like historical fiction, there just happens to be a couple of fantasy elements in the story. Oh, and the world the writer has created!! I just want to stay in it forever; I want to be lost in it always!! My favourite parts are the Night's Watch, men who patrol the immense slab of ice that protects the kingdom from the Others, zombie-like creatures thought dead eight thousand years ago, and the wildings, barbaric people who live off the land north of the Wall, and who just happened to be on the wrong side of the Wall when the slab went up thousands of years ago. The descriptions of that ice wall, and the men who patrol it, their rundown castle and life, eek!!, I just can't get enough of.

Love the summery slum of the capitol, King's Landing, and the wintery vastness of Winterfell; in the later books of the series I love Dorne, and the strong women there.

In this novel, every woman is strong and kickass, even beaten down Sansa Stark in her own way. And Ned, oh Ned (not that he's a woman, but the mention of Stark made me pine for him!!)...I love Ned the best I think. And I love King Robert, and Tyrion Lannister...but Jon Snow is who I'm really rooting for!!

If you read this book, prepare to scribble and post postie notes all over it, as you try to work out the mysteries of who Jon Snow really is; who is parents really are; the histories of all the houses; which house he would belong to depending on who his parents truly are...its enough to drive you batty and wanting more!!

Thank God I didn't first read it in 1996 when it first was published...I'd be a mess by now!! I am already having only waited a year for the conclusion of this series!! I need the answer to who is the rightful king (or queen!!) to the kingdom, and who will win at the game of thrones!!! ...more
