Let's say that John Wilkes Booth failed in his attempt to assassinate Abraham Lincoln and that Andrew Johnson was killed instead. Then let's say that Congress, dominated by Radical Republicans who are not happy with his approach to Reconstruction, impeach President Lincoln for crimes committed during the war and for attempts to circumvent said Congress. Stephen L. Carter had researched Lincoln's era before writing this novel, and was aware of how unpopular Lincoln had been. That's why he imagined that if Lincoln had survived being shot by John Wilkes Booth, he might very well have been impeached. When I saw this title for the first time, I also recognized it as a realistic possibility.

The central character of this speculative fiction actually wasn't Lincoln. It was the fictional free African American clerk at the law firm in charge of Lincoln's
