I really think this book suffered for its audience. For a middle-grade fantasy featuring an all-(nonhuman)-animal cast, this had an astounding amount of elements I didn't expect: kidnap, murder, (rather clumsy) Stockholm Syndrome, physical and psychological torture of children, and cannibalism, to name a few.
