I typically don't do too well with parallel universe, but this one hooked me right away. The story takes place in the 1800's in London, or should I say in 4 different Londons? Red London, Grey London, White London, and Black (dead) London, each very different from the others.

Kell lives in the alternate Londons, traveling among them, using magic and striving to keep peace. So he has purpose. He is considered one of the "Travellers," ones who can travel into the different worlds/Londons, because

This book was AMAZING! I mean, where do I even start with this?! The writing was fantastic from start to finish, keeping me intrigued from the very beginning. VE Schwab is a fantasy-writing GENIUS; this is hands-down one of the best fantasy novels I have ever read. How is that she was able to perfectly weave stories together that seemed minor at first, but come to have such importance later on? I really enjoyed this book, and I especially enjoyed Steven Crossley's narration. The premise of this book was interesting, with hints of Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. It was a bit slow going at first, but became a fast, easy read toward the 40-50% mark. I love any story with a strong, badass female character who is neither heroine or villain, but more morally ambiguous...and Lila Bard is definitely that. It doesn't read too much like YA, which I'm glad about, as I find YA novels to focus ...more
