One of those books which I read to appreciate/understand, and not necessarily for pleasure; as a historical artefact, The Mill on the Floss is a feminine Bildungsroman and insight into a time, and place, where a girl/woman's knowledge and talents are limited to what her less worldly family views as appropriate. It was hard to read the book without banging my head on the wall and saying "NO! Maggie! YOU HAVE SO MUCH! IGNORE YOUR FAMILY! DO SOMETHING WITH IT!" - while her world, and culture, is wh
