J'ai l'impression que si ce livre avait été écrit par quelqu'un d'autre que Gaiman, il aurait été moins encensé. Même si l'idée de départ et l'histoire générale est superbe, j'ai trouvé l'enchaînement mal ficellé, l'histoire boiteuse et un peu arrangé avec le gars des vues. Je ne me suis pas attaché aux personnages. Quelques scènes en font un livre fantastique pour adulte, et je crois qu'il aurait été mieux justement de couper ces parties pour en faire un roman jeunesse.

A 3/5 doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy this book; there were numerous things I liked about this book. I loved the magic and the fresh take on it- it wasn’t just black and white, but purple and green and red and blue. I really enjoyed reading the different stories- the story of Tristan and the star, the story of three brothers, the story of Dunstan and Lady Una, the story of the witches who desire to remain forever young through devouring the heart of star- and how they intertwined. I really enjoyed reading the different stories- the story of Tristan and the star, the story of three brothers, the story of Dunstan and Lady Una, the story of the witches who desire to remain forever young through devouring the heart of star- and how they intertwined. I loved the world of faerie- it was so whimsical and magical yet full of dangers at the same time. The cross-over between the mortal and faerie world were also great and I wouldn’t have minded reading a bit more about the divide. The book was full of quirkiness, and these small quirks- such as Tristan’s mum having cat ears and being bound to a witch until the oath was fulfilled- made this book great. The writing was beautiful- it was poetic and the descriptions were wonderful. I really enjoyed the film adaptation of this, and although the book was different, the differences weren’t bad.

But there were a few things that notched this book down and my expectations were not fully satisfied. The book started off with a great pacing from which you could gather a sense of the story, but near the end I felt as if it was rather anti-climactic. Certain events which had been building up momentum and it seemed as if would cause a lot of trouble, were easily resolved. There were also certain places that could do with a bit more elaboration and the characters fell slightly flat without the certain insight required. Tristan didn’t have much of the depth that normal protagonists have and I didn’t really connect with him as a result and the star, Yvaine, remained that, a star. I didn’t get much of a sense of her humanity, although it was apparent in the movie.

Overall, I enjoyed this book (regardless of its faults) purely because of Gaiman’s writing, the world and the eccentric and original story. If you’re a fan of fantasy, magic and fairy tales, this book should move up the ladder on your to-read list. I’m definitely looking forward to reading more of Neil Gaiman’s books. ...more
