Probably 4.5 stars. Let me get out of the way what I didn't love - sometimes the writing was a little too much, I didn't connect when Daniel/Deming describes sounds like colors. Otherwise I really enjoyed this and think it should be taught in schools - it gives a really human perspective on immigrants that I think is missing in the national conversation on there issue. An undocumented immigrant arrives in NY, pregnant and indebt to smugglers. The story succeeds both in terms of the immigrant experience and as an exploration of what it means to be a mother.
