I had to keep reminding myself that this was written in the midst of WW2. Translate that to today and it would be like a historical fictional novel written during 9/11 and the following war.
How she was able to capture the HUMANITY while going through it is amazing. I know I would have been to raw or numb to pen something like this without comeing across as vindictive or soapboxish.
Would have been nice to have had the last 3 parts and see what she would have written had she survived.

Because the events in this novel were based on the author's life, it makes it all the more poignant because she did not survive the war. Her vivid prose captures the turmoil following the Nazi invasion of Paris. Many harrowing decisions face all the characters in the book and the choices people make run the gamut from self-preservation at any cost -- to making sure that others are protected and cared for.

I'm sure I would have enjoyed this much more if it wasn't "assigned" reading for book club. Overall, I liked it but just wasn't in the mood for another take on WWII although the author's personal history is very interesting to me (and sad).
