this book was one of the best books written by John Steinbeck that I have read since Of Mice and Men. I love the plot line, how it deals with two totally different families and blend them so well with the bible story of Cain and Abel. Its awesome!

A long book that didn’t feel long—indeed, it could have been even longer and would not have suffered for it, such is the brilliance of Steinbeck’s writing.
There is an excellent story, well developed and realised characters—flawed but mostly likeable. It moves quickly, but takes its time when it needs to. It is rich but not necessarily ornate or extravagant. It is imbued with a powerful sense of a place in an important time in America’s history.
