Lamott's book reads like your best friend is trying to tell you the secrets to the universe but then you learn that really she is telling you the secrets to your secrets. Namely, that verse you heard on the wind when you were a child, the one that winked at you and teased you with bouncing words. That was the day you fell in love with words but you didn't tell anyone. Anne Lamott’s Bird by Bird is a lighthearted book filled with humor and wisdom. Lamott’s ironic view of the realities of writing creates a well crafted, accessible text. Her wry commentary about God, writing and the nature of twentieth/twenty-first century living is engaging. Surprisingly gritty and deep which was wonderful. Incredible emotional support for writers. Plus the direction you need to write a "shitty first draft," mine your emotional memories, and being conscious of everything around you.
