A beautifully written short piece based on Joyce's infatuation with an attractive young student of his in Trieste. At only 16 pages and sparse text that could be described as somewhere between prose and poetry, there is so much in here. Joyce abandoned this work and never intended its publication (it was rescued by his brother Stanislaus), but reused pieces in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Ulysses, Exiles and even his poetry (A Flower Given to my Daughter). i really like this little gem of prose. it lets us see joyce at his most candid, just emptying his thoughts and not trying to show us how brilliant he is. there's not all that concern for meta-micro structure, and linguistic pyrotechnics. it's like reading the late burroughs of the cat inside or my education.
