This book is famous for Kenner's formulation of the "Uncle Charles Principle" as a key element of James Joyce's writing style. He argues that in many parts of Joyce's work, word choices are altered with calculation to focalize a character's perspective, while not necessarily changing the style or deviating into another aspect of free indirect discourse.
