Dubliners is a collection of short stories that show people paralyzed by routines and repetitions that pervade their lives. The theme is introduced early on in the first story The Sisters, in which the boy keeps repeats the word paralysis to himself. Trapped in the routines that arise from various sources such as work, social expectations, and Catholicism, the characters in each story experience frustration. Dubliners is one of the greatest short story collections ever penned. Ever. It's got the micro-macro level sequencing and planning of some of the greatest sonnet sequences. Joyce truly planned this book out in a highly artful manner. Each story is good, some are great, and a few are early masterpieces in the career of a writer who has influenced every single writer since, and even some artists in different mediums.
