Dubliners is the first published book of a man who is one of the greatest writers to ever wield the pen; it reads as such. The prose is beautiful, and symbolism and morals abound. I read this in about 4 hours I believe, Joyce's Dublin sucked me. I just finished reading it carefully, once again.
Joyce, reputedly the cool modern aesthete, seems to show a bit of compassion and sorrow here, as he observes, and teases out, the purgatories that his subjects make for themselves, and make for poor longsuffing Ireland, which he teases out in terse, compact, and exquisite prose.
I was seized by an uncontrollable desire to get the hell out even though I am not living in turn of the century Ireland. No wonder he chose silence, exile and cunning.
