Coming indirectly through the early pages of Ellman’s biography are real and fictional references to the Dublin social strata from which Joyce emerged. The outstanding marks of the class are found in the main activities carried out (mainly) by its working male population. As one who has long studied and admired Joyce, this is the type of thing all writers or students or academics aspire to write.
This is one of the most transparent, all-encompassing, well-researched, and direct-to-the-point biographies I have ever read. Period. Anthony Burgess called it "the greatest literary biography of the century." I Would differ with him, slightly.
