Not an easy, heart-warming read, I started just because it was on a list somewhere, and I figured "Why not?" I read it in a one-day marathon because I found I could not put it down. I was on a Greyhound bus (bad enough!) when I started it, and the when I got almost to the end, the light outside was fading and the overhead light for my seat was not working so I would lean into every passing streetlight that cast a glow on the book and followed the light with my body to read as much as I could bec

Most of us like to think we're going to survive an apocalyptic event, should one occur. We imagine a spirit of adventure and survival and heroic escapes. 'The Road' is a heartbreaking alternative to this. Is it more realistic? Who's to say, but McCarthy's prose is good enough to read, even if it was about, say, the End of the World.
