A rare YA book including queer and black characters where struggling with those identities is not really a plot point. Hallelujah. Queer relationships are a given, taken seriously, and accepted by adults. The anxiety and fear felt by characters over 9/11 and the sniper shootings are a great way to explore anxieties and other feelings about love. The "teenspeak" and angst level are grating at times -- I think some teens would agree, but certainly some would appreciate these elements.

I want to give this book four stars but it sits more at a solid 3.45 for me. Something about it made me not love it, but it was still wonderful. Basically what I was expecting and hoping for when I read Love is the Higher Law. Perhaps, just like in the conversation between Craig and Lio about 9/11 here vs. 9/11 in New York, it meant more to me and resonated more with me because of one important fact.
I was in high school, in DC, dealing with the Sniper, at the same time they were.
