I had no idea she was such a good writer. This book gave me flashbacks to my aspiring years as a Classics major, latin and ancient greek, with Dikyopolis the farmer and his lazy slave, to fall and winter days in New England, and to days when your idealistic visions sometimes led down unexpected paths. I read this book probably 10 years and decided to revisit before diving into "The Goldfinch," her latest. I remembered liking this read a LOT more then than I did this time around. It's a fine story, but with a slight tendency to be over-written. Where I think suspense is the idea, it now reads as a lot of extra words to get a point across.
