I own the 2006 edition of “1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die.” Peter Boxall is the general editor and the preface was written by Peter Ackroyd. This book has compiled 1001 recommended books, primarily novels which were selected by over 100 contributors (literary critics, professors of literature, etc.). For each recommended book there is information on the author and a short blurb about the book.

I was very surprised that I liked this book because it is not something I usually read. When reading this I could not help but have a feeling of disbelief. I would read certain details and just think to myself, "no way". I would recommend this book to someone because it is very original and interesting.

This is a profoundly thought-provoking book. I tried to start it once before years ago and gave up within the first few pages; I can't imagine why now. The scariest thing about this book is that it really seems vaguely plausible, perhaps now more than ever. Atwood has a way of getting to the root of society and pinpointing what is wrong and how it could actually go given the right set of circumstances.
