This book tells the story of Highclere Castle and its inhabitants during the time period that Downton Abbey (which is shot there) is set. I found the first portion of the book very difficult to get into, as it's mostly a recitation of names and places and society lady things. However, once we get into the Great War, it becomes much more interesting. Just as in the show, the family turned the castle into a hospital, and there are some other interesting echoes of things that happen in the show. Ov

I really liked the behind-the-scenes details, but hearing about all the people that the Carnarvons ever associated with was dry.

It took me nearly three years to read this! It was my book of choice before going to bed when I was tipsy: not complicated, British, and I didn’t care too much about what was going on. It was fine overall.
