I couldn't put this book down; it really read like a novel. The characters were fascinating and complex, and perhaps none as much as the city of Savannah herself. It really does seem like John Berendt, despite being an outsider, was able to capture the spirit of Savannah--perhaps despite (or because of?) Savannah's proud tendencies for insularity and not caring about the outside world.

I found the book more travelogue than murder mystery. It was interesting to learn about Savannah's isolation and it's eccentric personalities, but I found the book overall pretty slow. The vivid writing couldn't make up for the slow and meandering plot.
