Reread because I hadn't read this since I was a kid and the details were all fuzzy. (To wit: I'd somehow conflated Boo Radley and Benjy from The Sound and the Fury.) What a beautiful experience it is to come late to a "classic" work of art and find that it lives up to its reputation. I don't know how I missed being assigned this book in jr. high like most Americans, but somehow I did. In college and graduate school I mostly studed British and World Literatures. This is a classic that I shamefully and inexplicably managed to never read. Though I really thought I did for the longest time! Very glad a book club forced me to own up to this sad fact. Since everything I could say has already been a Ph.D thesis, I will say that I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it once I finally fell into this world. As someone who grew up in a very tight knit community I really related to the world of Maycomb and Scout and Jem's exploration of it.
