Maybe 3.5 stars. I read this for a book club and really enjoyed the atmospheric, historical writing about a lighthouse-keeper and his family on a remote Australian island in the 1920s. I've been long meaning to read more fiction that takes place in Australia (that is why I have an Australia shelf) since it is such a mysterious place - so remote and yet so culturally similar to the US. Also, I've long had a fascination with lighthouses, having lived next to one and been married by one.

Engrossing - the book deals with major ethical dillemas and it will keep you guessing as to the decisions the characters will make and what the results of. Explores what it means to be a mother as well as the effects of war. Captivating scenery with a very unique setting (an island with a lighthouse and its 2 inhabitants: the man who operates it and his wife). Set in Australia after the first world war. Weakness: Isabel is hard to empathize with and left me continually frustrated. Good book for
