Mara
Kept having to remind myself that these stories were true--a testament to the seamless narrative style of Katherine Boo. Her presence as narrator is nearly invisible; the stories of the book stand without judgement (thank goodness, considering she is an outsider). Some real heartbreaks in here, presented so plainly that the shock is magnified. I wasn't surprised by the unflattering characterization of nonprofit and social work, but that doesn't make it less sad for continuing to be a reality. On ...more
