I could not finish this book. I really wanted to but I got tired of the voice the book was told in. I got tired of the full and derogatory use of the n word. I got tired of the stereotyping of Dominicans (that fat Dominican ass...) and just the general language. Although this book makes me think of "Drown" in a sense, I was just terribly disappointed. Maybe I'll try to read it again another day, but I wanted so much and go so little. ...more

liked it a lot! better than oscar wao, which i also liked. saw diaz the other week for a talk and really enjoyed that, too. although he did same some shit about eugenides 'copying' rushdie, comparing 'middlesex' to 'midnight's children'. not cool.

This review is specifically for me, to never select a book based on its cover. I had a hard time getting through this. Not only did I feel like I wasted a large portion of my life pushing myself through this, I enjoyed absolutely nothing about this writer's style of writing. The character development was poor at best, and I really wanted to either like or understand someone...anyone in the book. My main complaint...the author's usage of the n-word. 3.5 stars. Diaz certainly creates some raw and interesting prose, but I wasn't blown away by this work as a whole. If you're new to the author, read The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao instead.
