I could not finish this book. I really wanted to but I got tired of the voice the book was told in. I got tired of the full and derogatory use of the n word. I got tired of the stereotyping of Dominicans (that fat Dominican ass...) and just the general language. Although this book makes me think of "Drown" in a sense, I was just terribly disappointed. Maybe I'll try to read it again another day, but I wanted so much and go so little.

The vernacular dialogue is stunning, yet the tales within are really depressingly repetitive. Perhaps this chronic infidelity is characteristic of Dominican ex-pats, and not a stereotype propagated by this book.

3.5 stars. Diaz certainly creates some raw and interesting prose, but I wasn't blown away by this work as a whole. If you're new to the author, read The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao instead. ...more
