As a fan of Sherman Alexie’s stories, I’ve long been meaning to check out the works of his equally prolific Native-American novelist counterpart, Louise Erdrich. The Round House reads like a literary true-crime story (but without any grotesque crime details, thankfully), and richly conveys a sense of life on the rez: rampant drinking, poverty, and abuse, alongside deep Indian traditions, a multigenerational community, a belief in the supernatural, and pervasive respect for history and ancestors. ...more

I don't have much to say about this one. It was a good read, and I thought it must have been a memoir until pretty far into the book, because of the way Erdrich drops little retrospective tidbits.

I guess I have other things to say that would be spoilers, so maybe I'll just leave it at this: judging from the afterword, Erdrich was using this book to raise awareness of something. Great style of writing - very poetic and descriptive. Enjoyed the perspective from a 13-year old boy, but wanted a little more of the story in the final chapter.

Excellent story, excellent narrator, vibrant characters--sonja, cappy, mooshum, father travis. So much sadness but still some really funny moments of teenagers being teenagers. I also liked when the narrator would move into the future a little bit and you'd get some foreshadowing of what was to come --law school, marriage, the death of his father, etc. ...more
